What it's all about
Milele began after we spent some time in kenya and were struck by some of the inspirational people we met there. The resourceful, enthusiastic and determined attitudes of the children in particular still never cease to amaze us. We were also shocked by the simple fact that in all too many cases children are born with their future already mapped out for them. Milele was born to give children like this a chance to get a good education.
Milele is a kiswahili word meaning forever. It is also a sponsorship programme supporting the education of children in Kenya, specifically the shanty towns north of Mombasa, Kenya. The sponsorship pays for education costs such as uniform, books and school fees as well as having a food programme providing at least one good hot meal a day and a healthcare programme which covers vaccinations, basic provisions such as mosquito nets and toothbrushes as well as an emergency healthcare fund.
All the children on the sponsorship programme would be unable to raise the funds any other way, so sponsorship really is an opportunity of a lifetime for them.
Milele is unique in its funding. We combine 3 sponsors per child, each supporting their education, with a fund we raise per child before we sponsor them to supplement this and support them through their whole education. This provides security and peace of mind for all involved, as well as meaning there is no way any child's new found opportunity will be taken away from them due to lack of funds. It also provides us with the capability to respond to medical emergencies.
What's needed to make it a reality
The main thing we are currently doing is fundraising like craaazy! The more money we can raise, the more children we can sponsor. It is as simple as that! So if anyone reading this has any ideas of ways we can raise money, useful contacts or would liek to help us in any way, even if you dont live in the same area, please do get in touch and email us at milele@live.co.uk

Thanks for coming along to the session on Monday, it was really nice to meet you. I added the photo up here, but Rachel said you wanted it changed, which is absolutely fine. You can just add whatever photo you would like to your idea, we just add them to make sure that every idea has its own photo.
Perhaps you could run some sort of awareness campaign about Milele, which may open up some new fundraising avenues to you.
Let us know if you need any support or advice, we're here to help!

thanks for the message,
yes, i didnt mean to be rude about the photo, its just that it seems bad somehow if it isnt actually related to the project in any way.
I dont really know how to go about an awareness campaign, what sort of thing do you think? We are doing two charity lauch events just before easter, and we have boards up in two different locations, iv been giving out leaflets left right and centre, is that the kind of thing you mean?

Not to worry at all. It's good to see you've added loads of photos to the site :-)
Wow, it sounds like you're actually doing a lot already to raise awareness and fundraise, I hope they're proving successful. The charity launch events sound good, what exactly are you going to do?
Ideas for other fundraising could be to run some sort of event or club night at your university to raise money and could potentially get lots of students involved in. Or you could send letters to local schools to see if they would run a non-uniform day to raise money and maybe you could go in and give a talk about what it is you're doing. You never know there may be a school that is interested in acting as a penpal to a group of children in Kenya. In my old primary school, they have a link with a school in Malawi and every now and then they do fundraising events to raise money for that school and exchange letters. These are just a few ideas and you may already be doing similar things, but I hope they may be of some use to you.

An idea for fundraising might be to involve the students at your university. Perhaps, something similiar to the fresher's week activities, such as a inter-hall activities - to participate in the games you have to pay. Just ensure the price isn't too expensive, and ensure that it covers the activities with money left over for the fundraising.
Hope this may be of some help
