Idea: St Jude's Art workshops

What it's all about

WE want to run an afternoon of art workshops for the children that use St Jude’s Estate Agreement Group community centre.

We will help the children to paint canvases which will then be displayed around the centre, this will brighten it up a great deal.

The children will be from the local Somali community. Their families use the centre on a weekly basis.

What's needed to make it a reality

We need about 12 volunteers to help out.
Anyone with or without art experience.

Thanks for posting this idea. I'm really pleased that you want to get involved with the group in St Judes and the art project sounds like a great idea. I have sent you an email too - we need to put our heads together to think about what resources will be needed and how we can make it work.

    Get in touch!

Because you are a student at UWE you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. UWE is one of 15 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from your Junction49 staff member (Jo) to help you get your project up and running.
  • Avatar Emma 18:29, 09 May 2008 Thank you very much!

Considerations so far, firstly involved brainstorming with Jo and Amber what materials will be required (i.e. what is needed in terms of canvasses, paints, or paper/board and frames etc).

Ideas for how to organise the day are still being discussed and developed (in terms of whether to have it be a 'free-for-all', or whether to focus toward a particular theme for the Art work).

There is more to think about, especially with regard to how to structure the day. I will be meeting with Jo again on Monday to update ideas and plans.

Some of these considerations will depend on the requirements of the Community Center itself, as the main users of it must be happy with the finished product obviously! We are awaiting confirmation from them about some specific information.

I shall update these comments with progress reports.

It is very exciting, so many thanks for all of your support and suggestions!

  • Avatar Emma 20:04, 17 May 2008 Great news!!!!! it went really really well!!!

The sporadic numbers of people joining in went from a slow start with only three (maximum five) to over fifteen altogether!!! everyone enjoyed themselves and lots of works of art have been produced. ten canvasses, and additional pictures.
The sense of community was lovely- everyone happily got along with painting their ideas, mums, dads, grandmas, took part and helped, and UWE volunteers did a collaborative painting to join them. Each canvas began with a circle, for which the majority was used as frame in which to paint. Everyone interpreted this in their own way, making the collection share a similarity, yet remain diverse.
They will be a part of the Art Trail, dates etc I am unsure of at this moment, but I shall update.

So, well done to all of the Artistes, and UWE volnteers who redecorated the centre, and thank you to Junction49 for enabling it to happen!!!
